Overview

The importance of reducing the carbon footprint in Motorsport has become increasingly apparent since researching and analysing the topic’s various aspects. With the public becoming progressively aware of the adverse effects of pollution and environmental issues, Motorsport and its governing bodies are now having to take these environmental concerns into account and physically develop ways of reducing their carbon footprint in order to be deemed more eco-friendly. This can be achieved by improving mechanical systems, considering alternative fuels and materials and ensuring Motorsport venues conform to today’s green requirements.

After looking into EEMS and what is currently going on around us, a realisation was made that there is currently significantly more evidence of hybrid technologies in Motorsport in comparison with advances made in electric racing cars. This I feel is not only the case for Motorsport but also the automotive industry as a whole. The idea of rechargeable electric vehicles is still far from taking off, though it would be sure to say that hybrid technologies can clearly be seen as a race winning technology, with this year’s LMP1 vehicles at Le Mans being a physical example of this.

The fans and public are very far away from accepting such an immediate change in terms of environmentally friendly Motorsport. No doubt electric race cars will eventually become a regular occurrence in Motorsport but this will not be for a while. At the moment electric Motorsport seems to be a mixture of hopeful promises that new electric race series will be with us very soon, but there is still no sign of this happening yet.

I personally feel that the future of electric Motorsport will be very much dependent on consistent marketing and advertising strategies in an effort to diminish the (un cool) image of silent vehicles tootling around today’s race circuits. Not only this but circuits must be readily equipped with the required technologies, health & safety aspects, infrastructures and facilities that would come with these new electric racing series.  When this time does come, today’s vehicle manufacturers will have the opportunity to showcase their latest technologies and prove their ability to move with the times. These new electric vehicles will have to prove themselves as worthy competitors in the world of high performance racing vehicles if they are to stand any chance of gaining equal footing with their petrol guzzling competitors.
